Episode #10: The Tracks We Leave Behind

Krissy’s shoes in Jon’s living room.

Krissy’s shoes next to his mom’s.

There are a pair of shoes sitting next to Jon’s couch. They are blue and well-worn. They look like the type of shoes you’d wear on a summer day maybe to the park or the grocery store.

What was Krissy doing the last time she kicked these shoes off? Had she been out with the kids? Was she coming back from the doctor?

I don’t know the details of the last time she wore these shoes but what I do know, without a shadow of a doubt, is how Krissy walked around in this world. She was fun and funny and compassionate and kind and imperfect.

Not far from where those shoes still rest, there is a Bible tucked in between little treasures and books on an old wooden shelf. The Bible is also blue and well-worn. There are some notes written by Krissy in the corners of its pages. One is next to Jeremiah 31 dated 10/5/15 - a few months after she was diagnosed.

Jeremiah 31:2-6 reads:

This is the way GOD put it: “They found grace out in the desert, these people who survived the killing. Israel, out looking for a place to rest, met God out looking for them!” GOD told them, “I’ve never quit loving you and never will. Expect love, love, and more love!

Her note to the left reads: When we are wondering where God is admist our trouble, he is running towards where we are.

And on the left, next to the words she underlined love, love and more love, she wrote: I am experiencing this from everyone. God using my village to love, love, love.

She walked through this world loving others and she was loved. And her footprints are everywhere.

What has always meant so much to me in life is what people’s feet do, not their words.

If you step into someone’s presence that is the easiest way to give you smallest bit of hope even when you’re down in the dark
— Jon
If the person you love dies you’re never going be ‘Well, I met the presence quota with them.” You’re always wish you had more (time with them).
